Gillispie Officially Out

At a press conference today it was announced that Billy Gillispie is officially out as the head coach at the University of Kentucky after just two seasons.

That is word and I will have a long update later tonight on what this means and the homerun that UK MUST hit with the next coach

What The Future Holds For Kentucky Baskteball

The next 24-48 are sure to be a wild ride for anyone with a vested interest in the University of Kentucky basketball program, with reports surfacing that an announcement will be made regarding the future of Billy Gillispie most likely at a press conference tomorrow afternoon.

Most reports have Billy out as head coach of the Wildcats, but until the announcement is made all talk will just be speculation.

My opinion remains that Billy should remain as the coach for at least one more year as he has not had enough time yet to right the ship. I understand that if he is dismissed that not all of it will be about the performances on the court, but more or less the way he interacts with the media and his role a head coach of the Wildcats.

I say work with him on it and watch him improve, this man has been a winner every where he has gone and I think with time he would put Kentucky back at the top of college basketball. This man eats, sleeps, and breathes basketball and no one wants to win more than he does, maybe I am wrong in believing that if given more time he will succeed and if I am wrong I have no problem admitting it, but I really think at the current time he is still the right man for the job.

If a change is made than you can expect to hear 5-6 different names thrown around for the job and maybe more. Billy Donovan, Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Travis Ford, and perhaps even other names will possibly be on Kentucky’s short list.

I think maybe 2-3 names on that list would consider, Donovan from all reports is once again Kentucky’s main choice, but just two years after he spurned the Wildcats would he reconsider and take the reigns?

Rick Pitino is the name that plenty of people in Lexington are pining for and Rick has always loved UK and regretted leaving here, but no way do I think we see Pitino on the sidelines next year.

John Calipari has built a dynasty down in Memphis and many really believe that he would be a perfect fit for the Cats, but with a past that includes possible recruiting violations I cannot see Mitch and Lee calling Calipari and offering him the job.

Travis Ford is a man who gets what Kentucky basketball is all about and many believe would have the passion to get us back to the top, will Mitch pull the trigger on a former Wildcat or look elsewhere?

No matter what happens in the next couple of days you can expect to hear anything and everything about what is going on, but until the press conference happens and a decision has been made one way or another I choose to believe nothing.

When word does break you can expect constant updates from me and what the decision means for Kentucky basketball.

Uncertain Future Faces Kentucky Basketball

With a loss tonight to end Kentucky’s season let the whirlwind of rumors begin. Lee Todd has said to not expect any news before Friday, but that will not stop everyone from talking about what is going with the future of the program.

I will be back tomorrow with a full post about the game tonight and the direction I believe the program will take so look for that sometime around noon tomorrow.

Until then have a great night

Kentucky Gets Big Win, Take On Notre Dame Tomorrow

The big story the past week has been about Billy Gillispie and whether he will return next year, but last night the Kentucky basketball team gave the fans something much better to talk about, a comeback win on the road against a very talented Creighton team. Kentucky never led the game by more than one point until Jodie Meeks drove to the basket with 10 seconds and converted on an old fashioned three point play. The Blue Jays missed a game winning three at the buzzer.

Jodie Meeks did not have one of his best games this year, but he hit big shots down the stretch for the Cats and poured in 13 of his 16 points in the second half.

Patrick Patterson got into foul trouble early in the first half and barely saw the floor in the first half. He played an excellent defensive second half as the Blue Jays were able to get nothing going offensively in the paint. Also a big congrats to the big man as he joined elite company as 1,000 point club, way to go Patrick

Perry Stevenson had a very good game as he posted 13 points and 10 rebounds for the double double. He missed some shots, but continued to fight and fight and help will this team to a victory.

A very big win for the Cats in what was a difficult environment as the Creighton fans were loud and rowdy throughout the entire game.

The win extends the Cats season as they are rewarded with a trip to South Bend, Indiana to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame for the chance to advance to New York City.

Hopefully with this win maybe the rumors will die down about, but I doubt it. I just wish that the fans could focus in on this team and how hard they gutting it out. I listened to some call in shows today and no one wanted to talk about the great win last night, but instead talked almost exclusively on Billy and while it is an important topic I just wish the fans could put their attention to the kids for the rest of the season

Once this season ends let the speculation begin and feel free to talk about it continuously, but until then I say lets focus on Notre Dame and the chance to possibly meet the Florida Gators in New York. There are still potentially three more chances to watch this team play and grow towards next year and I say lets at beating Notre Dame and anyone else we might play instead of having straw polls on who we want to be the next coach.

I will have a new post up tomorrow at some point so look for that, hope everyone has a great night, and go Cats and lets beat the Irish

Great Win For The Cats

It was not pretty and the Cats never led by more than two points all game, but the Cats held onto win, thanks to a three point play by Jodie Meeks to propel the Cats to victory.

Kentucky now will travel to South Bend to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, a win will advance the Cats to the semi-finals in New York City.

To me this was hands down the best win we have had all year, this Creighton team could have easily been in the NCAAT and their crowd was rocking. Patterson barely played in the first half and Meeks was not his normal self and we still managed to pick up the victory. I am very proud of this team. This was a great win for Gillispie and his team

I will have a full update tomorrow on the win.

Basketball Fans Should Note Patience With Rich Brooks

On October 14th Kentucky lost to LSU 49-0 and all hell broke loose in Lexington, message boards, water coolers, and talk shows were all calling for his head saying that this old man did not know what he was doing and that he should be fired. Fast Forward to March 23rd 2009 and Lexington Kentucky could not be happier with the football program and the “old man.”

Since the debacle in Baton Rouge Kentucky has gone 20-12 including wins over the eventual national champion LSU, yea the same team that beat UK by 7 touchdowns just one year earlier. UK since then has defeated Georgia, Arkansas twice, Louisville twice, 2 Music City Bowl victories over Clemson and Florida State and a Liberty Bowl victory over East Carolina.

Rich Brooks has the football program in perhaps the best position that it has ever been as the 2009 version of the Cats could be a team that wins 9-10 games this year. The defense returns key players and the offense should be light years better than last year. Rich has also brought in a top 30 recruiting class including two quarterbacks that could have gone to any school in the country.

It is funny how things come full circle as now just two and a half years since the masses wanted Brooks gone those same fans are calling for Billy Gillispie’s head. Rich was in his 4th season when the heat started to turn up on him, but Billy has not even completed his second season yet, but still the majority of fans are calling for his head.

I understand that this is Kentucky and we are supposed to be fighting for NCAA championships and NIT titles, but that still does not change the fact that he not had enough time yet.

I continually hear from people that he does not know how to coach or that UK jumped the gun in hiring Billy, and to that I say that you could not be more wrong. Billy was one of the hottest if not the hottest coaching prospects available in 2007. He had completely turned around programs at Texas A&M and UTEP and had proven that he was an outstanding coach.

Should Billy have had this team in the tournament? The answer to that is without a doubt yes, but as we all know he didn’t and yes that is a major disappointment, but two years is not enough time for anyone. This is still the same exact coach that just one year ago was named the SEC Coach of the year, this man knows what he is doing.

We the fans need to trust in Mitch and his decision making abilities. I have heard countless times that Mitch should be fired and that he has no idea what he is doing, and to that all I can say is that you could not be further from the truth.

Since Mitch came to Lexington in 2002 the football, baseball, and women’s basketball programs have seen huge growth and all programs are in possibly their best shape ever. I know a lot of people around here just laugh when talking about other sports than basketball, but truth be told our athletic department is in as good as shape as it has been in the 21 years that I have been alive.

There are certain things that obviously bug all of us, like Bill’s irregular substitution’s or his inability to connect with the media or worst of all his ability to lose games that we have no business losing, games such as VMI, San Diego, Gardner Webb, and Georgia.

I also want fans to think about the repercussions that would follow if Billy was fired.

You have to believe that Patrick and Jodie would very much consider leaving Lexington for the riches of the NBA, especially if they were leaning towards the NBA than you can guarantee that this would be the final straw in their decision.

Potential recruits could spurn the Wildcats, 2010 Dominique Ferguson has already said his recruitment would open up if Billy was no longer the coach of the Wildcats. The 2009 class is an excellent one, but all would be able to look elsewhere if Gillispie is gone and you would have to believe that at least one of them would sign elsewhere.

I think it would be very hard to find a big name coach that would leave his top notch school to go to Kentucky knowing that if things do not go well that they too could be fired after just two years.

The impact of firing Billy could lead to a season very similar to the situation we have seen from Indiana this year, maybe not as bad, but next year could be very bad if Billy is gone.

On the other hand UK could be a potential top 15 team next year if everyone including Billy returns. Jodie and Patterson would be primed for another huge season. Darius Miller showed us this year that he will be a star for the Cats. A top 15 recruiting class coming in this year including a true center in Daniel Orton that will allow Patterson to move over and play his true position the power forward.

Next year can be very special or it could be a potential disaster and it all depends on Billy and his future.

I obviously understand that the football and basketball programs are held to a different standard, but I want people to look at what the football program has done. Mitch showed patience in keeping Rich and it was the best decision he could have made.

So next time you are calling for Billy’s head I want you to just stop and think about the football program.

Quick Update

Yesterday was a great day for basketball as the night cap had some fantastic games, I will recap yesterdays and today’s game tomorrow.
